About Meskot Education

Meskot Education is a charitable nonprofit, registered in Ethiopia and the United States, that helps children in Tigray learn, with good lessons in their own language that reach them with or without internet.

Our mission

Good lessons in every child's own language, made by local teachers, reaching children in Tigray with or without internet.

Why Meskot exists

Many children in Tigray learn in large classes, with few books in their mother tongue, and without the internet or steady electricity that digital learning usually needs. Good lessons exist online, but most children cannot reach them.

Meskot exists to change that for the long term: a growing library of lessons that need no internet, made by teachers who know the curriculum, the language and the children they serve, and put to use with the schools and communities around them.

What Meskot is

Meskot Education makes curriculum-aligned video lessons with local teachers in Tigray, in Tigrinya, and makes them available online and offline: on USB drives, on DVDs and through SolarSPELL digital libraries.

Meskot Education is a charitable nonprofit organization, not a school or academic institution. We develop educational resources and work with teachers, schools, and communities to help children learn, wherever access to good education is limited.

Desta M. Abreha, Founder and Managing Director of Meskot Education

Told by Desta M. Abreha, Founder and Managing Director

How Meskot began

My inspiration came from my own experience of growing up with few learning resources in my mother tongue. Later, as a professional, I taught myself tools such as Photoshop, video editing and digital marketing through online video tutorials. That showed me how powerful accessible video-based learning can be.

Meskot was born from a simple question: if digital tutorials helped me build professional skills, why shouldn't children in Tigray have curriculum-aligned video lessons in a language and context they understand?
