Our work
Meskot works with local teachers, schools and communities so that children in Tigray can learn with good lessons in their own language, at school and beyond it, with or without internet.
The need
Digital learning has changed education elsewhere. Most children in Tigray cannot reach it yet.
Many children in Tigray learn in large classes, with few learning materials in Tigrinya, their mother tongue. Internet access and electricity are unreliable in much of the region, so online lessons and learning apps rarely reach them.
Strong foundations in reading, mathematics and science shape everything a child learns later. Meskot's aim is that every child can reach good lessons to build them, wherever they live and whatever the connection.
The model
From the curriculum to children, with or without internet.
-
Curriculum
Meskot starts from the approved K–8 curriculum of the Tigray education system.
-
Local teachers
Experienced teachers from Tigray, who know the curriculum, the language and the children, prepare and present each lesson.
-
Video lessons
The lessons are recorded in Tigrinya, the children's mother tongue.
-
Online and offline
They are shared online where there is internet, and offline on USB drives, DVDs and SolarSPELL digital libraries where there is not.
-
Children
Children use them in schools, community centers and Offline Learning Corners, where a teacher can guide them.
Strong foundations
The purpose behind every program.
Meskot's lessons supplement classroom teaching. They let children watch a lesson again, practise at their own pace, gain confidence and strengthen the foundational skills that later learning depends on.
Each lesson follows the approved curriculum, so it fits what children study in school.
Askul Tesfay Gebru prepares and presents Meskot's Tigrinya lessons for grades 1–4.
Programs
Four programs carry the model to children.
-
Offline Learning Corners
Shared learning spaces inside existing schools and community sites, where children learn with Meskot's lessons and a local teacher. The first is at Adikentibay Complete Primary School in Shire.

Back2School
School supplies for children going back to school, given out in rounds over time.
Back2School gives children the supplies they need to return to school: books, pens and bags. Meskot runs it in rounds, in several cities in Tigray, including Mekelle. Over time, it has reached 6,000 students. The latest round, in July 2026, gave back-to-school kits to 334 children in Shire.
